Dracula compare per la prima volta nel romanzo di Bram Stoker (1897). La storia inizia quando il giovane avvocato Jonathan Harker si reca nel castello del vampiro per fargli firmare dei documenti per l'acquisto di alcune proprietà a Londra. Il conte sembra, inizialmente affabile e cortese, ma presto la sua ospitalità si fa soffocante, al punto che Harker fa molta fatica a uscire (vivo) dal castello.
Nel frattempo il conte si imbarca alla volta di Londra e nel corso del viaggio, uccide tutti i membri dell'equipaggio meno il capitano (protetto da un crocifisso, ma che , comunque muore di stenti durante il viaggio). A Londra tra le prime vittime c'è Lucy Westenra, che il conte visita ogni notte per nutrirsi del suo sangue.
Nemmeno l'intervento del dottor Abraham Van Helsing riesce a salvare la vita di Lucy, che muore per poi risorgere come vampira e venire definitivamente uccisa dal marito Arthur Holmwood.
Scomparsa Lucy, Dracula si concentrerà questa volta sull'amica di lei Mina Harker, moglie del dottor Jonathan Seward. Ma stavolta Van Helsing, Harker, Holmwood, il dottor Seward e il loro amico Quincey P. Morris, sono decisi a combatterlo.
